Urban gardening: comparative study on pollution's influence on the quality of vegetable production in town and in the country
The Science Shop project on pollution in collective gardens was born of a request submitted by two Lyon-based collective gardening associations concerned about the soil (and vegetable) quality of their gardens: the MJC Confluence (with its three shared gardens) and the family gardens of the Jardinons à Villeurbanne.
This multidisciplinary study therefore calls upon the agricultural sciences and sociology to answer the question arising from civil society: “Are our gardens polluted?” In response to this initial query, we set about reflecting upon the methods of cooperation between the different scientific disciplines, as well as with the five gardening associations involved in this study. This study was meant to compare the scientists' and the gardeners’ relationship with and approach to pollution, as well as the gardens' ethnographic data and chemical data (the chemical characteristics of the soils and vegetables). In this manner, through individual and collective interviews of the gardeners, we were able to shed light on their perceptions of pollution and record their concerns regarding the possible pollution of their gardens. At the same time, we also carried out soil samples and chemical analyses of the vegetables, to take a comparative approach to answering the gardeners’ question. This coordination between multiple disciplines and the ethnographic study of collective gardens led us to consider the creation of a common platform bringing together scientists and gardeners for reflecting on pollution. In the end, this study seeks to answer the questions: What are the necessary conditions for producing a local environmental cause, and what means do gardening associations have at their disposal regarding the possible pollution of their shared gardens?
