Search for and experimentation of a new model favouring citizens’ involvement in a shared space
This project was born of a social request submitted by the Atelier des Friches, an association seeking to promote nature in town via artistic experimentations. The association had noted the rather limited appropriation of the Réserve Gourmande by the inhabitants of the Cité Jardin (7th arrondissement of Lyon). The mission’s initial objective was therefore to enrich the garden’s events and activities, so as to encourage the local residents' appropriation of this shared space.
Throughout the study, the many meetings held with the supervisors allowed for a framing of the reflection, which necessitated constant modifications due to the upheavals of association and the project. Likewise, the special relationship enjoyed with the activity-leader/gardener engendered a mutually enriched reflection. Indeed, this actor of the Atelier des Friches, who is daily and deeply involved in the Réserve project, is also the person with the finest understanding of this area.
Over and beyond organizing an internship to benefit the Atelier des Friches, this project also entailed a moral commitment to the association through the necessary proposal of actions and the construction of a robust argumentation in searching for explanations of the thought processes of the various stakeholders. So my arrival at the association coincided with questioning the presence of the Atelier des Friches in the project, and I was able to observe this change first-hand.
Considering my presence, its effects and the chosen methodology, the added value of my work consisted of producing an analysis of the project’s constraints and failures, of favouring a reflection on the association’s positioning, and of proposing new orientations for the site. Documents to aid reflection, such as the constraints diagnosis and the study’s results, were used during the internship during association meetings and with the partners. I connected a cognitivist model with the project diagnosis, presenting the information in an organized and hierarchical manner, to a socio-constructivist model when the decision was made to hand over the Réserve. This co-construction allowed for a comparison of each party’s representations and a dialogue among the various stakeholders, so as to design the future project in the most consensual manner possible.
