Analysis of the effects of student life on a neighbourhood’s socio-economic dynamics

Share |

For fifteen years already, the 7th arrondissement of Paris has been home to a large population of young people, with 15- to 29-year-olds representing 36% of its population. According to the 2011 census, over 15,000 students study in the arrondissement, with 63% residing on-site. The Guillotière district in the north has the highest concentration of students, whose population continues to grow: since 1999, the number of students residing in Guillotière has increased by 24%. Although this district is home to so many students, this population’s occupation of the neighbourhood has never been analysed and the Guillotière district council has begun to question its impact.

This study was born of the concerns expressed by this representative citizen body, seeking to understand the issues associated with the massive growth of this population. Several questions thus emerged regarding the related market dynamics at work (housing, activities, etc.) and the possible transformation of the Guillotière district’s identity due to the presence of this student population. Nevertheless, it would seem necessary to point out that the student identity corresponds above all to an institutional status. Therefore, speaking of a student identity runs counter to the very heterogeneity and constitutes but a rigid vision of this population; the present summary will pay particular attention to this central consideration.
